You know that great feeling you always get when you go into Costco? You know... the rush of knowing your getting a great deal? Well, my friends, be prepared for that feeling to get even better! Costco has enacted some really proactive policies about its seafood suppliers, what it will sell, and has overall implemented better (more sustainable) seafood practices.
I personally applaud the effort. I think it really shows a lot about the core values of the company and that Costco cares about the environment and the oceans.
In all fairness it's not all about saving the ocean for Costco - one of largest contributers to the Democratic Party - this "better practice" happened after a letters from shareholders and concerned citizens. Certainly the higher ups of Costco also realize that this is some great PR as well as maintaining the supply of the products it sells. Afterall, you can't sell seafood if all the marine life are dead.
I think if a lot more companies made a similar organization-wide difference we might start to see some real change in the way the business of seafood is handled. It could really start to change the way we buy food by switching the way things are done. We could create a more balanced environment for our sea living edibles while at the same time being able to enjoy them on our plate.
