The European Union has found a possible solution to the dilemma. They are talking about actually paying fisherman to catch trash instead of fish. This sounds like an amazing plan all around; not only would it help clear the oceans of garbage, but it would also diminish the numbers of fish caught, thereby helping to remedy the overfishing problem—all while still allowing fishermen to make a living and support their families.
The program will be running as a trial throughout the month, so hopefully it will produce positive results and encourage further programs like it to develop—ideally on both sides of the Atlantic. As far as paying for the project, it will supposedly be started with subsidiary funding, after which leaders hope the recycling will pay for itself.
