Industrial Fishing Kills Millions of Sharks

Here’s another reason why mass commercial fishing isn’t a great idea for the planet—it results in the loss of sharks. According to Oceana, in 2008 alone, 1.3 million sharks were the collateral damage of the commercial fishing industry. But since lots of countries don’t even report their bycatch, the number is thought to be a lot higher (isn’t it always when it’s something negative?).

Many of these sharks are also unfortunately endangered ones—but endangered or not, no animal deserves to be killed as an “unfortunate accident,” a casual cast-off of a bloody industry.
